Welcome back YKC community … Wishing a meaningful Passover to all those celebrating. It feels like this spring we may finally taste freedom.
As for the zoo that is Israeli elections. TBD, we shall see how this pans out, but never a dull moment. As the ancient proverb states “may you live in interesting times”. We may be on our way to 5th elections…
I will be in Israel after Passover; I’m vaccinated and would love to meet in person and catch-up. Additionally, if you’re a growing Israeli startup and looking to hire high-skilled workers in the US let’s chat about how I can help you find that talent in Tulsa. What I'm reading
Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life Hardcover by Jordan B. Peterson: JBP does not disappoint. What we need right now, creating order out of the chaos in the world and in our minds. In this sequel to 12 Rules for Life Peterson offers his rules on how to face a world of chaos, one that only seems to becoming more complex, and changing faster than ever in the span of human history.
He chooses not to address COVID in this book (as he states in the preface that it will eventually pass) and the ideas are timeless (they are). With so much uncertainty today (even before the pandemic) there has been an explosion of books focused on offering people (particularly young men) guidance in making their way in the world. These are guidelines more than anything else, and it takes time for the lessons to unravel themselves, but this is one of the first post-COVID guides on how to live the Good Life, the Moral Life. The pandemic brought us to the brink and we stared into the abyss, it impacted everyone’s lives, but it is our responsibility to draw meaning from the experience, if anything to make sense of the suffering.
Relevant today, there are stories of the ancient Hebrews breaking free of slavery as Peterson ties in historical and religious themes into his writing. There is also freedom in constraints, the joy in focusing on the right things, and not being distracted by all the chaos around us (both real and online). This book is for people who want a deeply philosophical perspective on how to improve themselves. It is not an easy read, and if you want an intro to his work, I’d suggest you start with the videos on his YouTube channel which popularized his ideas.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Personal responsibility is vital: It is also holds the key to long-term happiness.
⚪️ Life is suffering: But you are strong enough to face it and overcome whatever obstacles life throws in your way.
⚪️ A post-pandemic guide: There are so many ‘gurus’ out there, Peterson is a philosopher whose work needs to be absorbed longer than your average TikTok.
