“Summer’s lease hath all too short a date”

Curated by YKC

Welcome back YKC community … and to the start of the summer. A Chag Samech to all those who celebrated the holiday of Shavuot.
My latest article in Medium… exploring different topics, and an idea I plan on developing further: The Rise of the High-Performing Caregiver
My friend Dorie Clark’s talk “The Real Reason You Feel So Busy, And What to Do About It” (based on her newest book, The Long Game) was recently featured on the TED.com main homepage, and has already garnered over 425,000 views. In it, she explores the hidden reasons we all feel stuck on the hamster wheel - and why it’s so hard to break free, even when we try to. If you or someone you know feels too busy, this 8 minute talk is for them! You can check it out here.
As we enter the summer, I’m offering digital marketing services through YKC Media, my B2B content marketing agency. I’ve recently launched a service for LinkedIn ghostwriting, so if you’re a founder, investor, or executive who wants to build thought leadership on the most important platform in business ping me directly.

“There will always be rocks in the road ahead of us. They will be stumbling blocks or stepping stones; it all depends on how you use them”
-Friedrich Nietzsche
What I'm reading
What I'm reading
In Emergency, Break Glass: What Nietzsche Can Teach Us About Joyful Living in a Tech-Saturated World by Nate Anderson: I wish more books like this were written, about how we can thoughtfully navigate our digital world and screens… instead of them leading us. There are some excellent ideas in this book, and it goes deeper then pop culture ideas such as digital detox and limiting screen time… in questioning what’s the point on detaching from tech if we’re not even clear on what kind of life we want to live?
What we focus on expands, as despite having so much information (content) available, we’re drowning in useless knowledge (and often mindless entertainment). This was the struggle that Nietzsche dealt with during his time in academia, which led to his restless wandering and writing. The idea that curating where our time is spent, and these days, what content we’re consuming, helps us try to create meaning from this existence. And while this may be a simplification of our complex lives, there is truth to that idea, that what are we focusing on most of the time? We’ve never had the amount of ease in our lives, and we fret over the smallest and dumbest things. Only a few generations ago, we lived much short (and not romanticize the hardships) but maybe more meaningful lives. We have slowly been sucked into a world of streaming content, push button ordering, and ease, and that has separated us from our humanity.
Nietzsche’s work is not for everyone, but so much of what he writes, at the turn of the 20th century was a harbinger for the distracted culture we now live in. This summer is as good a time as any to go outside, spend time with family and friends, and to focus on being alive.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Creative exertion: How to experience life at it’s fullest… through meaningful struggle.
⚪️ Turn-key solutions: This book challenges us to ask what are we actually pursuing.
⚪️ We still struggle to find meaning: The age old question, even in today’s time of access to knowledge… but wisdom is still missing.
