“Time is the fire in which we burn” 🔥

Curated by YKC
Welcome back {{first_name}} … finally a break from heat. Check out my latest article The Israeli startups taking NYC property-tech by storm in ISRAEL21c.
I’ll be speaking about how Israeli cyber is helping protect the tri-state area on Wed Aug 7th at the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey (50 Eisenhower Drive, Paramus). FedTalks: Israel Featuring Wine & Cheese: Israel Transforming The Tri-state Area Into A Cyber Capital. If you’re in northern NJ join us, they’ll be tech content, wine/cheese, and good company. For tickets and more info email JCRC Director Ariella Noveck at: AriellaN@jfnnj.org
A number of you have asked me about putting together an event so join us on Aug Wed 14th, 6:30pm at Mykonos Blue at Hotel Hayden (127 W 28th St.) for an Israeli Tech Summer Rooftop Happy Hour. If you’re in the NY tech ecosystem and want to meet a number of good like-minded people in a short time or have an interest in Israeli tech and want to connect with both American and Israeli professionals you should definitely join. I’ll set up a Slack group closer to the event to facilitate introductions and make sure people have a chance to connect. Tickets here.

What I'm reading
21-Day Daily Stoic Freedom Challenge: Not a book but a collection of philosophers and ideas condensed in a 21-day challenge. The real goal of this challenge is not just to cultivate the attributes of living what Stoics called the “Good Life” but ultimately to be free. While we don’t live in an ancient Roman or Greek era where slavery existed (and controversially, gave the elites the time to actually philosophize as society was built on slave labor) we are still slaves to many modern conveniences such as social media, gossip, and negative/limiting thinking.
Stoicism’s goal was to prepare it’s adherents for death, and living a free virtuous life while on Earth. Closer to my personal experience I haven’t experienced an interpenetration of Judaism which serves as an operating system for dealing with the challenges of the 21st century yet. Utilizing some of the mindsets in Stoicism and Buddhism (mindfulness) have served as a toolkit in dealing with the difficult emotions, fear, and uncertainty of the times we live in, yet I haven’t found the same toolkit in the Torah. The closest I have personally found in modern Judaism for optimizing mindset is psychotherapist Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy based on his experiences in the concentration camps. Unsurprisingly his interpretation (and importantly, his reactions) to the horrors of the Holocaust echo of Stoic philosophy.
We’re living in a period where people are lost, where modern day thinkers such as Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson (influenced by Frankl), and Mark Manson sell out stadiums to lecture on philosophy and how to live the Good Life 2.0. Ancient Judaism (which has developed to be more then just a philosophy, it’s a culture) is thousands of years old and certainly has the wisdom to offer millennials and centennials the tools to thrive during these times. Throwing down the gauntlet for the challenge, who will present a Jewish interpretation on how to parlay thousands of years wisdom in order to live an optimized life in the 21st century? There is a significant opportunity here for a leader looking to lead the flock out of Egypt (slavery) into the Promised Land (freedom).
Key Challenges:
⚪️ DAY 1: Take A Cold Shower or Plunge: As a self-proclaimed self-development nerd who journals, meditates, diets IF and keto, the one thing that I don’t do is take cold showers. The whole act seems pretty dreadful to me. Definitely a daily habit I am struggling to accomplish!
⚪️ DAY 4: How Long Can You Go Without Complaining: I complain way to much, and it was even worse (this sounds like a complain now) when I actually took time to monitor this act. We’re all spoiled, and complain so much… if you can rid yourself of this mindset I believe your life will dramatically improve.
⚪️ DAY 6: Go A Day Without Your Smart Phone: Forget FOMO, I prefer JOMO: Joy of Missing Out. You’d be surprised how much less stress you feel when you’re not you’re on your smart phone all day. Here’s a mini-challenge: put your phone away during your next meeting.
