“Nothing burns like the cold”

Welcome back YKC community … to YKC.
A big thank you to LinkedIn News last month for featuring my thoughts on employing Gen Z truckers (the 3rd segment in the video) in their Wednesday Wrap Up video here.
After a month of making short-form videos, and experimenting with different ideas (with a loose business theme) on TikTok I decided to go in the direction of making videos around #booktok for the next month. The niche seems a bit wholesome and not focused on business lit, so hopefully I can add some flavor with my TikToks 😉
My goal by the end of Q1 is 10K followers, though I may fall short there is power in putting it down in writing. Make sure to follow me on TikTok here.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees by Ben Mezrich: Another book which I enjoyed more than I thought I would, and kudos to the author for balancing a nuanced story, and the underlying challenges it brought to the surface, as well as not going down the rabbit hole of conspiracy   theories flying around the Internet.
As someone who has spent more time with people who work on Wall Street then troll Reddit boards, but empathize and identify with a lot of tech’s ethos, I felt both sides were given a fair shake in the book. I did find it hard to identify with the “misfits” on Reddit, especially given the classic anti-Semitic tropes hurled at the hedge fund managers. But there was plateable anger in the WallStreetBets Reddit group, by people who truly felt wronged by the system. But really, how was Robinhood any different than the Wall Street system they raged against? Silicon Valley is just as elite as Wall Street, just a different era, different pedigrees, and more wealth concentrated in a few hands, and larger astronomical sums of wealth created.
I suppose this short squeeze was a black swan event, and it goes to show you how much power the fintechs, and social networks will continue to have.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ It was a perfect storm: Lots of free time, a platform, and stimulus checks.
⚪️ Part of Silicon Valley’s secret sauce: They know how to engage their audience.
⚪️ Tech is only accelerating inequality: It’s not just the little guy or gal it is empowering.
