What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be by Steven Pressfield: This book is calling on Gen Z creators to heed the call of adventure, leave comfort, and embark on the artist’s journey. It’s definitely in the same vein as the author’s classic War of Art, but for a new generation, and a new audience. The fundamentals however stay the same… creative work is about doing the hard work, being patient, and showing up every single day.
You can tell what side Pressfield is on in the return-to-work debate, as he believes that as a creative you need to be active in-person where things are taking place. I have mixed thoughts about this idea, it’s not that I don’t think remote work has its negatives, I just think the world has changed. If anything, I put a lot of effort and time into developing relationships in person in New York pre-pandemic, but today believe you can have meaningful interactions online. As far as advice, the author’s creator bogeyman “The Resistance”, of course shows up again. Pressfield defines The Resistance as that emotion we all feel when trying to do something difficult, and it shows up as procrastination, excuses, self-distraction, and the like. They are all based in fear, and our fears are something we need to work on daily to overcome. We don’t always interpret the fact that we procrastinate as fear, but Pressfield challenges us to dig deeper within ourselves.
As someone who self-identifies as a creator, I’d recommend this book to young creators in any discipline. Until AI truly disrupts the ability to put your soul on paper or paint on a canvas, there is no difference in the act of someone typing today on a keyboard, and their ancestor scribbling ink on a sheet of papyrus. Understanding that, and knowing that others struggled with the same inner challenges, will help you connect with those who came before us, and will only inspire you in your craft.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Creators taking the lead: Not since the Renaissance has there been a period where creators (artists) have had such an impact on society.
⚪️ It’s about putting your ass in the seat: It all comes down to the simple fact that you need to do the work.
⚪️ It’s all up to you: This is where The Resistance rears it’s ugly head… you can’t rely on anyone else to do it, you must fight through and do the work yourself.
