Will by Will Smith and Mark Manson: I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy reading this book, and how much I would learn. Growing up watching the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” in the early 1990’s this book certainly brought back memories. Maybe it’s time to expand my reading habits to include autobiographies beyond former military leaders and philosophers.

I can’t tell where Will Smith’s voice ends and Mark Manson’s begins, as this book feels very much in Will Smith’s voice. But there is a clear philosophical angle, and lessons and insights the author takes from his experiences. An author sharing vulnerability is easy once they’ve weathered the storm, and each failure can be viewed through the champagne glass of extreme success and stardom. But there are raw moments in this book, and challenges the author covers like domestic violence, and strained family and personal relations. If anything, this is also a story of hip-hop’s rise and

commercialization, when it was a raw art form from the streets to the global phenomenon it is today. Will Smith’s assent and fall, and climb back up the mountain are steep, but for someone who made it in both the music and the movie business there can probably be no other way as fame is a state so many strive for, but yet so few truly reach. Most people make mistakes in private, but it’s on another level when one makes those mistakes on the global stage for the whole world to see.

⚪️ A moment in time: A snapshot of when hip-hop went mainstream, and the barriers the author broke in the entertainment industry.
