Welcome back YKC community … hope you are staying safe as we are entering the ‘dog days’ of summer. It looks like the “2nd wave” is coming under control in Israel, but it is hard to tell with conflicting reports in the media. Planning to be there for an extended period in the coming weeks. I have spent the time trying to be productive.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
The Boron Letters by Gary Halbert, Bond Halbert: This is certainly a period work, but early 1980’s as the period. This is a book on direct marketing and copy writing; it is a book of letters from a legendary copywriter who is incarcerated writing letters to his teenage son, a modern version of Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His Son. The author is in prison, and some of what he writes is offensive, but I still feel this book should be read. If there was ever a time to learn new skills/improve on existing ones it is during these days where one must become a “hyphenated” professional (ex. marketer - speaker - writer).
I am on a personal journey to improve my sales copy and copy writing skills; it is not just about professional development; it is finding new ways to improve my writing style. In marketing things have not really changed that much regarding what influences people’s buying decisions. While direct mail marketing does not exist like it did previously (it is making a comeback however alongside SaaS and CRM solutions), the principles remain the same. Understand markets, not products, when thinking about what people want to buy. Find your target market. Sell to those who want to buy. The ability to write persuasively and communicate effectively is one of the most important skills one can utilize during these pandemic days.
While writing is not easy, it is something everyone can learn, and while I do not believe everyone should write a book, most people have something to offer the world. If anything, anyone who is a serious marketing professional at a startup would benefit from understanding the principles in this book. In a future article I will lay out my views on how content and copy could be used more effectively in helping Israeli startups stand out (and not sound like every startup coming out of Silicon Valley), TBA…
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Remember to cover the basics: Mad Men style, it really is about understanding people’s behaviors.
⚪️ Good habits drive success: Everything written about creating your own success comes back to positive daily habits, even if one is in jail (or lock-down).
⚪️ Writing is not just about words: Halbert was not caught up in buzzwords to trigger people’s emotions, he was a student of markets.
