“All that live must die, passing through nature to eternity”

Welcome back YKC community … It is with profound sadness that I share the news that my father, Chaim Frenkel, passed away early morning last Friday.
I’m not such a fan of posting this type of personal news on social media, and would rather share it with this community. My father fought a battle with lung cancer… but lived a long and meaningful life, passing away at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. As I’ve shared with many of you, I took a pause to take care of him, and truly believe that our family’s care for him (and assertive patient advocacy) extended his life. Suffering the deep sadness associated with the passing of a parent is something most of us will have to experience, but it ultimately humanizes us, and helps us appreciate what we have. But it does not make it easy.
He was my hero for his contrarian thinking, yet easy going approach to life, and I already miss him dearly. I feel he is with me as I proceed in my next phase in life, and I still struggle to fully express these words… as his legacy will inform and inspire my writing in the future.
A perspective of his life here.
My family is having people over this evening and tomorrow in NJ, for details please email directly.
This article Medium I wrote before his passing is even more appropriate now: How to reframe any situation as something positive.

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You–At Work And In Life by Spencer Johnson: The age old question is if all these self-development books actually work? Do they help us navigate, and manage these challenging times, these ‘valleys’, that we all walk through at one point or another? Given what I experienced during the last few years, I believe these books can be helpful at times, but it’s the similar broad themes they cover where the wisdom lies.
This was a basic book, and it reminded me of self-development lit like Tuesdays with Morrie or the 5AM Club, as if people need bedtime stories to understand the concepts of cognitive reframing, visualization, and the importance of facing your fears, etc. During this recent period, I didn’t turn to books like this however, and instead sought inner strength internally. I got strength from the reference experiences in overcoming previous challenges, my Jewish (Israeli) heritage, and even some philosophy like the Stoics and Nietzsche. In the end, similar to the journey of life’s peaks and valleys, it’s important to fully embrace and accept both the good times and the bad times… in true Amor Fati style. This is the essence of the book, accept everything, and face life head on, without fear. There cannot be joy and love, without the finality of death, in which to appreciate life.
My father’s sickness and passing was a valley, but there was truth in the journey. My family appreciated our loved one, we learned about ourselves during times of struggle, and we expressed and accepted profound love. The long walk through the Valley of Death will ultimately lead to climbing a peak, not only in remembering his love, but in sharing my father’s contribution to society and legacy with the world.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ There is no peak without a valley: If anything, the higher the peak, the deeper the valley.
⚪️ Sometimes we need stories: Basic stories help us make sense of the world.
⚪️ These kind of books are a net positive: If you learn one thing from a book, it’s worth it.
