Welcome back YKC community … a year into this global pandemic that has completely upended our lives. While there is hope, it still feels like we are taking one day at a time.
Life can be tough and cruel, but we have the strength within us to face and overcome its many challenges. With Passover around the corner, now is as good a time as ever to understand we have the freedom internally to create whatever meaning we want from life’s experiences.
Be on the lookout for news items I’ll be posting regularly on LinkedIn; I want to be more engaged with the LinkedIn community, and would love your comments. To connect with me directly click here.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Why I Am Not a Stoic by Mark Manson: Maybe it is time to branch off from Stoic philosophy so popular among tech bros and athletes. When exploring other philosophies, you can credit Nietzsche with being the first self-development guru, so it’s worth understanding how we can use Existentialism, or “the approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will” to improve our daily lives.
There is a disconnect between many of these lofty ideas (usually in print, book form) and how they are consumed (YouTube videos and podcasts). Professor Jordan Peterson (in the next edition I’ll review him) is a good example; his books are hard to absorb, but his YouTube teachings easy to watch. There is something to be said about how this hodgepodge of ancient and modern philosophy has come to replace religion’s place among lost millennials and Gen Zers. This is particularly true among entrepreneurs, anyone building a social media following, and the tech set. I believe this is probably the case because these philosophies serve pragmatic functions; not just for spiritual meaning, but professional success as well. Ex., watch a Gary V video and create meaning around a recent setback.
Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed Manson’s previous books in how they offer helpful philosophies for modern readers, in terms they can understand. As for why he is not a Stoic (not that anyone calls themselves a modern-day Stoic, unless they’re a real…), read on. But the challenge is still there, if Buddhism, Existentialism, and the Stoics can find tactical uses for their philosophies in modern society, so can Judaism.
