What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius by Ryan Holiday: The historical perspective you need to read right now. Corrupt leadership. Pandemic. Global war and conflict. We’re not just talking about today; this was the world of ancient Greece and Rome the Stoics lived in thousands of years ago. Human nature being what it is, really the more things change…
This book reads as a straight history book in detailing the beginnings of Stoicism from its founder Zeno to the echelons of power in Rome, the longest running empire in history. Philosophy today has been resigned to the halls of academia, but as so many of our foundations have been shaken in 2020 it offers the mental toolkit to build what the Stoics called the ‘Inner Citadel’. The ability to control our inner world regardless of what happens around us. For someone who was a self-professed self-development nerd, all the empty advice of Instagram gurus and mastermind influencers proved useless during COVID; only tested philosophy from millennia ago continues to offer guidance.
The lessons in the book are shared not as a how-to guide, but in the actions of the many timeless characters in every chapter. Similar to ancient times, as COVID has broken down so much of what was built on fragile foundations (such as ego) it is the actions and deeds of resilient and honest peoples who overcome and ultimately succeed.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Heed the call: From shipwreck to physical exile, when Fortune brought difficult life circumstances, they heeded the call and rose to meet the challenges
⚪️ Practical learnings: How the Stoics lived their lives reveal lessons on how we can live ours
⚪️ The obstacle is still the way: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.“ Truly.
