Welcome to 2021 YKC community … This is my 100th issue using Revue’s platform… and in May I will have been sending this newsletter every other week for 5 years. My hope is that the information I have shared has helped you the reader, and I thank you all for joining me on this journey. This was my first foray into regular content creation, and has been the foundation for all my content ever since.
I do wonder if maybe it is time to ‘kill my darlings’ and end the newsletter on a high note? Or take a pause or a pivot?
My latest article in Crunchbase: More Women Are Needed In Israel’s VC Community
A small milestone, my first piece in a “mainstream” tech publication.
I for one am optimistic about 2021, despite what all the meme makers prophesize. The pandemic is still raging in the US and Israel and we have a long way to go, but the Startup Nation is setting daily records for the number of its citizens vaccinated. Let’s hope we can celebrate Passover at the end of March, and the freedom it symbolizes, healthy and mask-free… but that still seems like a world away.

The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers by Eric Weiner: The reason most people don’t read books by dead philosophers is that they’re really hard to read. Thankfully there are people who read those books for us, and distill all of the information for modern consumption… and how these past teachings are relevant today. The author of this collection of lessons does so by tying in his travels and making the philosophy come to life.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve felt that all these contemporary YouTube “gurus” have not been able to provide much guidance. This is for the simple fact they haven’t had to deal with the uncertainty of something cataclysmic like a global pandemic. Maybe we have gotten soft and complacent in modern society, but when you read the teachings of past philosophers you get a sense that they overcame immense difficulties, that philosophy was a way of life that made sense of a cruel and unjust world. People leaned on philosophy (or religion) to make sense of such unbearable pain, as they didn’t have the luxury to withdraw and feel sorry for themselves.
Are we going to usher in a period of deep reflection and self-analysis after we come out the other end of this pandemic? I’d like to hope so, but given the ever-present noise of the new, and not the true, on social media I’m not sure. One thing that will remain are the classics however, which can serve as a resource and a guide for finding the truth.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ It doesn’t take much: Most people don’t read, by familiarizing yourself with philosophy you’re staying ahead
⚪️ Everything has already been written: We figured human nature out a long time ago, everything is just being rehashed
⚪️ Now is the time: Ideas implemented aggressively today will shape the world post-pandemic; be the one presenting and executing against those ideas
