“Life doesn’t to you, it happens for you.”
-Tony Robbins
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley: All that is new is old. This goes along with my instinctive desire to eliminate unnecessary noise from my life (news/social media/dating apps) and seek insights from the classics. While not an easy book to get thru, Huxley predicted many trends we see today when he wrote this book in the early 1930’s.
Genetic engineering built on a caste system (upgraded humans i.e. Homo Deus), a quasi-religious belief based on industrialization (Henry Ford as a deity-like figure) which is parallel to Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari’s idea of a data-based religion, and a melding of the self and the collective (in utopia there is no real self) are life in this dystopian utopia set 500 years in the future.
Of course, everything came together when I read Harari’s analysis of this novel, and how it served as inspiration for his works in Tim Ferriss’s Tribe of Mentors.  I also gained a deeper understanding of Harari’s work and understood Huxley for the visionary he truly was. The evil here is the disconnect people have from themselves and others. The future he predicted, which is in many ways here, is scary because how can you fight a society where the aspiration is that everyone just be happy.
Key Takeaways/Thoughts:
⚪️Distratction (and medication) = Soma: Soma in this novel is the equivalent of strong anti-depressants + alcohol (without a hangover) 10X. Taking some soma is the solution anytime someone encounters an uncomfortable situation. Similar to how so many of us can’t be with ourselves we self-medicate with social media, television, or some other distraction. Or just over-prescribing medication instead of just facing the difficult emotions. Mindfulness is banished alongside Shakespeare and religion in Brave New World.
⚪️(A constant state of) Happiness is life’s goal: Huxley’s vision for society is that Happiness is the one true goal, and pursued with almost religious fervor. Man’s meaning for his short time on this planet is to be happy. Enabled by technology and instant gratification, how is this any different than what society aspires to today. John the Savage, the novel’s protagonist, whose behavior is impulsive, violent, and primitive by society’s standards (but connected to his emotions) rebels against this idea and a society which won’t accept his humanism.
⚪️2018 is not 1984: George Orwell did not look far enough into the future, as 1984’s vision of a dystopian socialist society never materialized. Huxley saw deeper into the future and envisioned the hyper-consumerism of our time as well as a gentile version sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Done Is Better Than PerfectThank you Zuck and Sheryl Sandberg “move fast and break things”. My motto and mantra. Don’t let fear: fear of failure, fear of what people think, fear of rejection, stop you from doing what you know you need to do. When I weight the option between shipping and waiting, I do a gut check and always opt for the former. The world is waiting for you to make your appearance, don’t disappoint it by making excuses. Just ship it!
