This is probably the last newsletter of the year (but I may get a bit bored in the gap before New Year, so never say never). This newsletter is supposed to be about three things (coffee, food and technology) so here are three links for each of those topics

Coffee
- The race to save coffee - A surprisingly good video from The Washington Post.
- Eastern Europe is Experiencing a Coffee-Chain Boom. Worth reading for the map graphic alone. Understanding what’s driving this may be key if you’re in a market on the decline.
Food
- Mario Batali and the Appetites of Men. (Seriously, f*ck that guy. The fact that his lack of remorse makes it more likely he’ll recover from all this is beyond infuriating)
- Is Food Art? (Is coffee art….?)
Technology
- Google Maps’s Moat. I’ve linked to Justin O'Beirne’s work befoe, I think it is excellent and a wonderful example of a great writer making a strange and obscure topic fascinating to read about.
- Silicon Valley is Turning Into Its Own Worst Fear. An absolutely excellent piece from well-known sci-fi author Ted Chiang.
- Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads. Excellent work from Pro Publica, about the endless unintended consequences of being able to target so accurately through Facebook.
I hope you have a wonderful rest of the month, whatever you’re up to - and hopefully enjoying some time off, some family time, or a little calm and respite.
Thank you for reading,
James
