I’ve been puzzling over something I heard Eric Nordstrom say on a podcast recently - apparel spending is down from 4.5% of discretionary income to 2.5%.
What I suspect is at play here is a gap between customer experience online and in-store. While spending in general is moving online quickly, the online apparel commerce experience is not ready to receive that business yet.
There is a glimmer of hope in AR and VR, though. Selling apparel is selling a fantasy of who you are in your new clothes; being able to see that reality will change the game.
