Video: Nothing. Has. Changed.

I recently sent an email to our students (many of whom are now scattered across the West) and told them that everything is different, but nothing has changed. With the struggles our world is facing with COVID-19, its easy to see that everything is different. But how is everything the same? I hope that this update gives you a glimpse into how God is still at work, in his normal ways, during a very abnormal time filled with difficult circumstances. And I hope that this encourages you and your life - that you would believe that God is still at work right where you are too. Scroll to the bottom for family pictures and ways to pray!

RUF WestCo // January 1-5th
The inaugural RUF West Coast Conference was simply greater than we could have hoped for. As RUF continues to grow westward, God is building a beautiful identify here on the West Coast. The west is culturally diverse, very different from the Bible Belt, and really (no really!) spread out. Students from 13 different schools gathered in San Diego for sermons, worship, seminars, and to continue to build a community. Our students learned so much and we are excited about how God continues to build his kingdom through RUF! Our group had an amazing time!
It was pretty fun to say the least!

Wives' Weekend 2020
Each January, RUF wives from all over the country gather together for a long weekend of rest, teaching, and prayer. We are so grateful that RUF invests in our families. This is a weekend that Bet looks forward to every year. Your giving enables her to attend this weekend and our ministry is BETTER because of it!

Large Group on Emotions
For the first part of this semester (8 weeks) I taught each week on Biblical emotions. The first two weeks we looked at God’s perfect emotions and our imperfect ones. We learned that we can trust God to both receive our emotions and that we can rest in his providence for our lives. We tackled anger, joy, apathy, anxiety, sadness, and grief. It was both challenging and beneficial (for me too!).
We meet in the Student Union and average around 30-35 students!

Monthly Freshmen Fellowship!
On the first Thursday of each month of the semester, we take the freshmen out for dinner to a local Boise spot. This has been a HUGE blessing for our RUF as it encourages freshmen to build relationships with each other and invite their friends. It’s so encouraging to see how God is growing up leaders from this freshman class!

Winter Retreat
At the end of February we drove two hours up from Boise for a weekend retreat where our staff taught on a Biblical World and Life View. We do this every year (we teach on a different topic) and are so thankful for the chance to get away and connect with each other. Because of the culture of BSU, the spring is a great time for new people to get involved. We had a number of new faces join us on our retreat. Some people also had the chance to go snowshoeing or skiing. Pretty rad!

Pray for Us!
  1. Pray for the new normal of ministry. We are meeting with students, hosting small groups, prayer times, and large groups. It’s different. Sometimes it’s weird. But just because our circumstances change, the philosophy of our ministry doesn’t. We are still reaching students for Christ and equipping them to serve. We need your prayers for wisdom!
  2. Pray for our Seniors. This was NOT how they expected the final months of their time at BSU and with RUF to be. Pray for their hearts and minds as they struggle through finishing school, finding a job, and dealing with the emotions of this all on a daily basis.
  3. Pray for our family. We are grateful for all of God’s blessings to us (we have a great yard that the kids can play in!). We were prepared a little more for homeschool since Bet has been homeschooling Laine this year, but we still struggle like most families are during this time. Pray for patience and for opportunities for the gospel to form both Bet and me, as well as Laine, Remy, and Breck.
  4. Pray for our funding. The Lord has been gracious in these first three months to help us meet our budget. We have had a number of one-time gifts and new monthly donors that have made this possible - some coming from seemingly out of nowhere! We are cutting expenses and thinking through how to best steward what we have. During this time of financial strain on our world, we are asking that God would raise up more one-time gifts from those that can and new supporters who give smaller amounts to help us continue to meet our budget. Would you pray about that with us?
  5. Pray for our students. They are living in a new normal - most back at home. Pray that God would teach them and grow them during this time in ways that are unique to this time. Pray for the Bible reading I’m doing with a freshmen guy and a new small group that we are starting up the last five weeks of the semester. Pray that God would do MORE than we could ask or imagine in the lives of these amazing students.
