I recently quit my full-time role as a Software Engineer to fulfil my ambition of leaving the 9-5 and becoming financially free. 🙌🏻 To make the journey more fun, I’ll be sharing it in public via this newsletter. I’d love to have you along for the journey. 🎉

I’m James! I’m 26 and live in York, UK. 🇬🇧
Since graduating from University in 2016 with a degree in Computer Science, I’ve worked full-time as a Software Engineer building mobile apps for iOS and Android. 📱
It’s been a fun 5 years and I’ve learnt a great deal; but as time has gone on, it’s become more and more apparent to me that working 40 hours every week for little reward isn’t for me.
Since school, I’ve always had the ambition of not being reliant on a 9-5 job; where time is traded directly for money. The dream is to earn money whilst you sleep, and the age of the internet and remote working presents a great opportunity to try make this ambition a reality! 🚀
Financial freedom is the goal; and in turn, doing what I want, when I want. So that’s what I hope to achieve in the next few years! 🙌🏻

I'm super excited to embark on an entrepreneurial journey of full-time indie-hacking, content creation, investing and freelancing! 🎉 I can't wait to get started! 🚀

🚀 What's the Plan?
The key to financial freedom is developing multiple passive income streams. So my focus over the next few months is developing new passive income streams whilst also enhancing my existing ones.
Currently I have 4 main income streams; each with different levels of passiveness;
  1. 💰 Salary - Full-time salaried role as a Software Engineer trading 40 hours of time a week in return for a stable monthly income.
  2. 📱 Mobile Apps - Indie-hacker side projects that are currently available to download on the iOS App Store.
  3. 📈 Investment Funds - Vanguard investment funds generating a solid monthly income and managed by a financial advisor.
  4. 📊 Stock Market - A smaller pot of money that I invest in individual companies on various stock markets.
As I have quit my full-time Software Engineer role, my stable monthly salary will no longer be a thing. So here’s the plan for what I envisage my income streams to look like going forward!
  1. 👨🏼‍💻 Indie-Hacking - In addition to my existing portfolio of mobile apps; use my skills as a Software Engineer to build new software apps and tools that I can monetise.
  2. 📈 Investment Funds - Keep topping up my investment funds to continue making a solid, stable return on the pot of money.
  3. 📊 Stock Market - Do further research into the stock market and use this to take investing in stocks more seriously.
  4. 👨🏼‍🏫 Online Courses - Publish online courses on Skillshare, Udemy and Udacity sharing my iOS development knowledge.
  5. 📘 Ebooks - In addition to online courses; use similar content to create a paid ebook.
  6. 💻 Freelancing - Use my skills as a Software Engineer to develop software for freelance clients.
  7. 📢 Doing it in Public - Sharing the whole journey in public via blogs and other mediums could present opportunities that can be monetised.
So that’s the plan! 👀 I’m going to push myself to come up with new ideas and different strategies in order to reach my goal. AND I’m going to share the journey with you via this newsletter.
💪🏻 Time to get Stuck in
So, here we go then; the start of my entrepreneurial journey to financial freedom! 🚀 So, fasten your seatbelts because I’m pretty sure it’s going to be one hell of a fun/terrifying/crazy/cool journey together! 😎
