On this World Environment Day, what does one wish for?
The developed countries are way ahead of the developing world in coming up with new environmentally sustainable initiatives. Yet, they still pollute much more than the developing world. At the same time, developing countries such as India are polluting more and more in the aggregate and even more on a per capita basis. This will not reverse in the near future. Employment and basic incomes today overwhelm the desire for a better environment tomorrow for most of the world.
The solution will finally be technological where greater income and employment opportunities can go hand in hand with reduced environmental damage. However, the R&D investments are coming in largely in the private domain in the western world, they are in silos, limited by concerns on immediate returns, with employment not being of primary concern. This needs to change fast.
