Towards a Sustainable & Inclusive World

Much is expected of a new government with a strong mandate. The previous five years showed that when not under pressure the government invested heavily in solar power, priced coal higher and collected funds for sustainable causes, embraced low-cost and low-energy use technology, expanded subsidy programs with massive public health benefits (Ujjwala Yojana), brought forward the introduction of cleaner fuels, etc. Some of this was no doubt reversed or weakened as time went by under economic and perhaps other pressures. However, the agenda for a cleaner environment was quite apparent from the massive mind space occupied by Clean India or Swachh Bharat campaign.
The economy may be under pressure and funds may not be accessible easily, but the instinct is towards a cleaner environment. I would not expect this government to take decisions where sustainability overshadows employment objectives. Yet there is much, such as electric vehicles, solar power, biomass-based energy, garbage and waste management, etc. where this government would have both the inclination and the capacity to take far-reaching decisions.
Let us hope!
