Towards a Sustainable & Inclusive World

While governments and political parties are making large promises on the environment, their own executive is either ignoring environmental issues or worse, actively participating in its destruction.
As is always true in India, there may not be a larger conspiracy and both the good and the bad are part of the same reality. Yet one would still wish: a proactive state can achieve a lot, both in terms of sustainability and livelihoods. Technology is one possibility, just implementing the laws is another and rewarding the good and punishing the bad is a third. Their common enemy? Apathy and sloth, which have become the hallmark of all tiers of government.
What is heartening though, is the new direction that the judiciary is taking, of punishing governments and its bureaucrats and technocrats who do not carry out their environment tasks. Perhaps there will be no ‘environment messiah’ and all that will work is a system of reward and punishment on governments and companies.
