Towards a Sustainable & Inclusive World

While this viewpoint focuses on environment and livelihoods, developments in other domains are having a direct and adverse impact. Neither the citizenship nor the economic downturn issue in India would go away soon, and environment will remain off the attention charts for some time to come.
However, there is a way out, be it citizenship or the economy, unemployment or the environment, it is possible for mature democracies to address each of these simultaneously.
When the world is growing rapidly, India faces a strange downturn driven by:
(a) a bureaucracy unwilling to take responsibility
(b) a judiciary poorly versed with commercial matters, and
© political leadership looking elsewhere
While no one knows better than the politician where to focus, the politician in a democracy has to give more attention to the immediate. Hence, even in centralized setups, institutions take over where the politician is unable to and together they can bring about rapid change.
It is now apparent that like most governments, India too does not have institutions that are mature enough to deal with a fast-changing world. So, while citizenship and economic slowdown have become more critical for the political leadership in India, it is time the environmental regulators are empowered, provided greater resources, and made more accountable.
