Ian Robinson's Weekly Digest - 22nd August 2021
By Ian Robinson's Weekly Digest • Issue #27 • View online
Five article pointers this week. I had to drop a few that were going to be included but are behind paywalls. There are also 19 new music releases. Another good week for new stuff. Like most weeks! Find me on Twitter to discuss anything. Except for temperature measurement scales ☺️

Propaganda: China’s propaganda firehose is going after the BBC - Wired - Link
China is alledging the BBC uses gloom filters to make China look bad in news reports and other videos. Flip sake 🤦🏻‍♂️ Article by Matt Burgess from Wired UK.
Science
Measurement: Superiority of Celsius over Fahrenheit - Erik Engheim - Link
This. Anyone who disagrees needs a good talking to! Celsius is so much better it baffles me that it’s even a debate. Those that I see advocating Farenheight grew up with it. USA-based people largely (and a few swivel-eyed loons who hate the metric system). I expect they’d say the same about us in celsius using countries. They are wrong 😊
Quantum Mechanics: How Big Can the Quantum World Be? Physicists Probe the Limits - Quanta Magazine - Link
An excellent article by Philip Ball summarising the efforts of researchers to observe quantum effects in macroscopic objects. They are still tiny but massive compared to the particles and waves where quantum effects are seen.
Culture
Human Rights: Terry Pratchett Was Never Here for Your Transphobic Nonsense - Tor.com - Link
An excellent rebuttal of the TERFs attempts to claim Sir Terry Pratchett as one of their own by Emmet Asher-Perrin. A ridiculous notion!
Blogging: A moment that changed me: my boss discovered my secret blog - The Guardian - Link
Despatches from a more innocent time by Emma Beddington in The Guardian. Busted 🤣
