Bogan basketball coach Arthur Goodwin died on Friday
. He’d been struggling with health issues recently, so it wasn’t a huge shock but it is a huge loss. It turns out Bogan’s defeat at Brooks in March was Goodie’s final game. I feel lucky to have covered it.
Goodie was the best quote in Chicago basketball and maybe in all of Chicago sports. I would wait as long as necessary outside the Bogan locker room, win or lose. He said exactly what he felt and there wasn’t a fake bone in his body. I’m sure that directness resonated with kids.
Goodwin after a loss at Morgan Park in 2018: “That is one of [Morgan Park’s] worst teams. Adam Miller and the four blind mice. We are 10 points better. Nick knows that. We just have to finish.”
Over the last few years playing at Bogan was the biggest test in the city for any team. Goodie turned that gym into a fortress. His quick wit, big smile and ability to relate to his players will be missed.
