ESJ's Movie Project

January 6 · Issue #49 · View online
I'm reviewing every movie I watch, and watching every movie I own. Settle in, this is going to take a while.

Keeping this short because I have to get to bed, but to answer the question in the subject line: Not great, Bob!
My predictions for the Golden Globes were pretty bad (only 3 matches between what I wanted to win and the winners, and 5 matches between what I expected would win and what actually won, out of 14 categories). And yet, it was a night of few surprises, I think because 2019 was an especially good year for movies. It started off slow, but finished strong, and I am really looking forward to catching up on films like 1917, Marriage Story, and — yes, even Joker.
The biggest surprise of the night was, of all things, the Best Animated category. Missing Link, which opened to poor to middling reviews, somehow bested three Disney/Pixar nominees — all of which were OK to good — and a very well-reviewed Dreamworks movie. Serious question: Has anyone seen this movie, and should I make time to see it? Not necessarily before the Oscars, but, like, ever? Because I certainly was not planning to before tonight!
Anyway…
