Smash Cut To:
Hello! I’m Hari, and this is Smash Cut To, my weekly newsletter about my adventures in trying to become a comedy writer-director.
This week, I took part in a Short Film lab, as part of this year’s London Screenwriters’ Festival. I got the feedback that my script was maybe a bit ‘too sitcommy’ — which was actually kinda nice to hear, because it means all the comedy writing practice is paying off! (Of course, it also means that my short-film writing still needs some work, but one step at a time 😅)
Have you received any interesting feedback recently?

We raced through the second season of Never Have I Ever, which was just as awesome as the first one. (Plus: it’s always a treat to hear characters occasionally speaking Tamil on a US TV show!)
And we’re still enjoying Ted Lasso, which made me lol:

Everyone involved in that breath-smelling scene from this week’s Ted Lasso deserves some kind of Oscar.
Also: the script-reading habit is still going strong! This week, we read the pilot of The Good Place – I’m a bit behind with my breakdown and notes, but I’ll include them in next week’s issue.

With my writing, I either want to:

▫️ break your heart 💔
▫️ break your brain 🤯

If I’ve done that, I’m happy
And that’s it for another week! 🥳 If you enjoyed this newsletter, maybe your comedy writer friends would too? If so, they can subscribe here.
