Your favourite VC firm Andreessen Horowitz - this is not on purpose, but I mention them a lot - shared the Marketplace 100. An index of the top 100 fastest-growing consumer-facing marketplaces. Top takeaway? The top 4 control about 76% of the observed GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume), with on top the behemoth Airbnb.
They gathered these companies to try to find out first what type of companies will represent the next wave. The biggest runner ups sectors are:
- Wholesale (like Faire)
- Celebrity engagement (like Cameo)
- Food & beverage (like Ritual)
- Streetwear (like GOAT)
These runner ups are interesting to watch because they could open up as new channels for your company, waaaaay before your market uncovers them. Selling your product direct to consumer now? What if you’d add your product to growing wholesale marketplaces?
