This article by Balfour stipulates how cumbersome retention metrics can become, that when you merely copy what others are doing you’re going to look at the wrong metrics. What strikes me every single time is how knowledgeable and experienced Balfour and his group of friends are.
You do not improve retention by brainstorming against ideas to improve retention. You have to identify the input that creates retention.
If you’ve been following Brian Balfour for a while now, you know that he’s a master dissecting what happens in a company and translating this into end-to-end growth models. This is where you plot all the variables that make up your business, that is, if you know what these variabels are. If not, there are endless possibilities to uncover the variables that make up your business model. By running the model with real data you can analyse upfront when your growth engine starts to generate output vs when that output will slow down and eventually die down.
It does not matter whether you’re in product, growth, digital marketing, content or something else. Staying close to the content Balfour and his team put out will give you an insight and maybe even a competitive advantage when going back to your virtual office on Monday.
