When leaders take back power, when they act as heroes and saviours, they end up exhausted, overwhelmed, and deeply stressed.“ - Meg Wheatley

It’s been a big year for both myself and OverTime Leader. New clients, new team, new work, and lots of travel 🙌 This meant that my newsletter got pushed to the side and I have not been able to share the insights I get from my work as much as I would have liked. Well, I’ve taken some of my own medicine and have built a small team around me to help me take on some the tasks that take me away from doing what I love most. #delegate
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the themes I see working across high-change, fast-paced technology organisations and thought I would share how leaders can step out of some of the traps in order to change the patterns in 2020.
You may identify with some, all, or none of the causes or effects. You might see these in yourself or perhaps in others. Regardless, the first and biggest step in leadership development is self-awareness. If you deny it, you can’t fix it. It takes courage to accept that you’re feeling disempowered, or are lacking motivation, and what I want you to take away from this is that you can change it.
Through my work, I have the privilege of being able to see inside the depths of both organizations and leadership teams, from start-up, to scale-ups, to corporates. I get the benefit of having a holistic view and can see the impact these environments have on our leaders. What I want to let you know, is that however you may be feeling, although you are not alone, the new way of working will take a toll on us if we don’t increase our awareness of these environments.
It doesn’t take much to have a big impact. I know that this time of year, our resilience is low, so in order to make sure you can kick-next year off with the right energy, start to reflect on what solutions you feel ready to start implementing to ensure you don’t get caught up in the traps.
Have a lovely holiday and I look forward to sharing more of my insights in the new year.
Lastly, a big shout out to my team who have inspired me and held me accountable to getting back to writing.
You got this.
