Hey friends, welcome to my little corner of the internet. You haven’t heard from me in a while. This is because, although I love fonts, it felt – and still feels – futile and insensitive to put the spotlight on new fonts given the current circumstances of racial injustice throughout the USA and the world. As the principal curator of this newsletter, I am now more aware of my responsibility to share the work of Black type designers. My first idea was to publish a special issue of Fresh Fonts entirely dedicated to the work of black type designers, but giving it more thought, it seems too punctual to have a real impact. I’m therefore discussing with a few of the concerned designers how they could be – and would like to be – better represented in Fresh Fonts. As always, I’m floored by the support of the type community. I’d like to thank Nouvelle Noire, OGJ Type, Flood Fonts and Julien Fincker for generously offering free commercial licenses and discounts to our Premium subscribers this month. This newsletter would not exist without you ✌️ – Noemi

Extraset 🇨🇭
Extraset is a new independent type foundry based in Geneva. It is jointly led by graphic designers from different studios, including Alex Dujet of Futur Neue and Xavier Erni of Neo Neo. The foundry’s starting catalogue includes six typefaces, of which Rebond Grotesque is my favourite.

newglyph 🇨🇭
This one, based in Lausanne, is specializing in variable fonts. It was founded by a team led by Ian Party, who is also a founding member of Swiss Typefaces. Fun fact, all newglyph typefaces are variable fonts with three axes of variation: weight, width and contrast.

Forever Grotesk by Nouvelle Noire
Forever Grotesk is Anton Studer’s take on the Swiss Style Grotesque genre. Available in fourteen styles, the typeface is particularly well-covered in heavy weights – with a Bold, a Black and even a Fat weight.

Ronaldson by Hardal Studio
Designed by Istanbul-based Fatih Hardal, Ronaldson is a display font in two cuts: Regular and Bold. It comes with an extended set of ligatures, in both uppercases and lowercases, including a nice one for the ‘www’.

Arpona by Floodfonts
Arpona’s small wedge serifs are partly inspired by letters carved in stone, giving the typeface a strong, memorable character in corporate design and projects that need to convey a sense of individualism, be it art, fashion, food, or lifestyle topics. – Yves Peters ( source)
🎁 Premium subscribers get 80% off all Arpona styles and family packs until July 26th. If you’re a Premium subscriber, reply to this email to get the discount code!
