Hi again! It’s time for another issue of Fresh Fonts. In today’s issue, you will find two gorgeous new slab serifs – one from Signal Type and one from Colophon Foundry, respectively. Are slab serifs the new type trend of 2020? I would love to think so, for it’s definitely a genre worth exploring more, and finding creative uses for.

Today’s issue was made possible by SuperHi, the online school where I learned to code. I loved their front-end foundation course for its hands-on approach – you get to code a new website from scratch every week, for eight weeks. And the variety of their short courses allow you to dig deeper, learn a new programming language, or get introduced to, let’s say, branding or project management.

Mortise
The team at Signal Type has been pretty busy lately, releasing a clean new website, along with three new typefaces. The one I would like to draw your attention to is Mortise, a slab serif featuring slightly curved vertical serifs, giving it a friendly look. Mortise comes with Tenon, its efficient sans sibling, and although they were designed to work together, they have no reason to envy each other. ☞ Signal Type also released Sinter, a sharper sister for their bestselling Center, plus a full redesign of Center itself.

Novera
This sharp geometric sans serif was designed by René Bieder in Berlin. Novera is available in two versions, both with the same original source file but with different characters set as default. While the Modern version was optimized for legibility at small sizes, the Classic version provides a more “helvetica-flavored look.” Both versions come in ten weights, with matching italics, and with extensive glyph sets of 1000+ glyphs per font. 🎁 For a limited time, get 75% off the complete family pack.

Goodall
Goodall is Colophon’s contemporary take on the geometric slab genre. It’s a beautiful design that makes use of open apertures and ink traps to remain highly legible at small point sizes. Goodall is available in five weights, from Regular to Black, with true italics. And its Pro version includes a pictorial glyph set of playing cards – in both white and black.

ATC Doubletap
You know me, I’m picky when it comes to script fonts – but this one caught my attention. It’s the work of Christian Dexter over at Avondale Type in Chicago. Called Doubletap, the font comes in only one style, but complete with ligatures, alternates, numerals and currency symbols.

Finder
Paris-based Black Foundry is behind this ‘neutral’ sans serif designed for user interfaces. The typeface natively covers nine different scripts: Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Finder comes in three weights (Light, Regular and Bold) and is also available as a variable font.

☞ The long-awaited GT Alpina from Grilli Type is here, with three widths, two optical sizes, and a monospace. It also comes with a wide range of emojis that can easily be animated thanks to its variable font version (see live examples on the minisite). ☞ Ohno Type released Fatface — an original serif variable font covering five widths and nine optical sizes. ☞ Adapter now supports Hebrew, and it’s gorgeous.
