Branding with Type published Beto last week, a typeface combining different features from over 300 years of serif design evolution. The outcome is a highly functional serif with a few contemporary notes, such as teardrop terminals that have been cut sharp on one side. Beto Grande, its display counterpart, boasts an increased contrast to convey elegance at large sizes.

Launched in November 2018, Detail Type is the foundry of Kamimura & Co., an independent design studio based in Japan. As you would expect from the clean and elegant work of the two brothers, their first retail release is a calm, sophisticated and noiseless sans serif. Unfortunately, it is not possible to license individual styles of Astro, but only the full family of 40 fonts.

Gradient‚ the small independent foundry of Milos Mitrovic‚ has joined Village with two new typefaces‚ Linear Sans and Radial. A geometric-turned-humanist sans serif, Radial is available in five thick weights, from Regular to Heavy, plus a variable font, allowing you to set a custom weight or slant. Radial comes with support for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.

A massive new family spanning seven optical sizes, from XXX Condensed to X Wide, Staff is a sturdy and versatile neo-grotesk designed by Rui Abreu. Its mechanical look is complemented by a few slightly offbeat details, like the pointed apex on the M, the enlarged bowl on the a, and the vertically-cut tail on the Q. Note that you can try, or rent, any of Staff’s styles on Fontstand.

The latest release of Process Type, Indivisible, is a contemporary geometric type family from designer Eric Olson. Complete with seven weights (from Thin to Black) and matching italics, Indivisible is a clean and friendly sans serif with a subtle warmth. Given its outstanding readability, I see it as a great choice for long-form reading or other uses at small sizes.

Commercial Type released Ayer, a vast display font family originally designed for women’s fashion magazine W Magazine. It comes in three optical sizes, with Ayer Poster, the largest of these, featuring four very different kinds of italics: a standard matching italic, a Cursive with wild swashes, an aggressively stylistic Angular, and an unexpected Blackletter. 

This daring sans serif is the latest work of Berlin / Helsinki-based foundry Schick Toikka. Available in three widths (Standard, Extended and Expanded) Lyyra combines symmetrical and mechanical letterforms into a typeface that conveys urgency. Perfect for identity work, Lyyra comes with diamond dots, although you can substitute them for round ones if preferable.

Designed by André Pless in 1972 and found on various vintage vinyl covers, Lucky was finally brought into the digital present thanks to Andrea Bianchi. Recently added to Google Fonts, DM Sans is a low-contrast geometric sans serif intended for use at text sizes. It was designed by Colophon Foundry, based off of the ever-popular Poppins. DM Sans is available in three weights (Regular, Medium and Bold) with matching italics, and pairs great with its serif counterpart (see below). Open source, free for personal and commercial use.

Just like its sans serif sister family, DM Serif was commissioned by Google and designed by Colophon Foundry, however, this time using Source Serif Pro as as starting point. DM Serif is available as a high-contrast Display face, and in a Text version, each one in a limited set of two styles (Regular and Italic). Open source, free for personal and commercial use.
