New Foundry

VJ-Type

French design and illustration studio Violaine & Jérémy launched their own foundry, releasing seven elegant typefaces that were originally designed as custom fonts for their graphic design projects. As they claim, their typefaces are not available in many weights, but all of them come with various stylistic sets, alternates and ligatures. Wonderful picks for titles and logo design.

New Releases

👱‍♀️ Alga (promoted)

Joana Correia just released an updated version of Alga on Future Fonts. Primarily intended for use at large sizes, Alga is a serif typeface with warm and fancy curves, perfect to add personality to your headlines. The typeface supports most Latin languages, in addition to Vietnamese, and is available in five weights (from Thin to Bold) with italics coming soon.

Wallop

The latest release of Prague-based Displaay is the retail version of a typeface that was initially designed for a magazine about indie culture. Named after the magazine, Wallop consists of a sharp sans serif with vertical terminals, although it comes with several rounded alternate characters (for P, R, w, W, m and n) in case you’d like to add a bit of smoothness to your designs.

FK Roman

Florian Karsten, the designer behind the foundry of the same name (and one of our favourite new type foundries of 2018) just published Roman. Available in Text and Display versions, Roman is a contemporary serif with modern proportions, designed for optimal readability at any size. Both subfamilies come in six weights, with a variable font included in family packages.

Room 205

The latest release of Texas-based Beasts of England is a bold, expressive font in the neoclassical tradition. Room 205 is available in only one style, but with more than 30 alternate characters and ligatures – that are absolutely worth checking! I see it as a great option for logos and branding, although it is suitable for use in different contexts.

Fresh Updates

The Kern superfamily by Pizza Typefaces

☞ Kern Standard now includes three weights: Regular, Medium and Bold, with italics and many alternates. It also comes with an upline companion, and a circled version (a variable font).

☞ Open source superfamily IBM Plex (Sans, Serif and Mono) now supports Arabic, Farsi and Urdu. In addition, a variable font version of IBM Plex Sans has been released.

☞ The final version of Ohno Blazeface Italic is now available from OH no Type.

Free Typefaces

Public Sans

You might have seen this one already as it received quite a lot of coverage, but unexpectedly, the US Government released their first typeface, which is an open source, highly legible bespoke version of Libre Franklin. Coming in nine weights with their italics, Public Sans is perfect for text, display, and interface design. Two variable fonts are also available. Open source, free for personal and commercial use.

Gotico Antiqua

Based on a series of workshops conducted between 2015 and 2018 across France and Germany, with over 150 students participating, researchers of the ANRT released the revivals of 16 fonts originating from the 15th century. Covering gothic and roman styles, the fonts were launched during a two day conference, of which you can watch all the talks online. Open source, free for personal and commercial use.

iA Writer Quattro

iA Writer, the cross-platform writing app, redesigned its open source typeface and added Quattro, a new, more proportional subfamily – although it retains large word spacing and monospaced punctuation. In addition, all three subfamilies of iA Writer now support Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and are available as variable fonts. Open source, free for personal and commercial use.
