Over ten years in the making, the newest release of Klim Type is a Renaissance inspired, contemporary serif. The elegant typeface comes in two families, Text and Display, making it well-suited for use at small, medium and large sizes. With Heldane, Kris Sowersby proves once again that he is at the top of his art. He shares his design process in this wonderful post.

Designed by Tobias Frere-Jones and Nina Stössinger, Empirica revisits the style of ancient Roman inscriptions, projecting grace and authority with its close spacing and delicate serifs – I mean, look at this teddy bear 🧸form of titling Ö! Ideal for use at large sizes, Empirica comes in six weights, from Extra Light to Black, plus italics. Oh and they also made posters, which are available on the foundry’s online store!

Colophon released Coign, a typeface based on the Elongated Sans of The DeLittle company, a foundry founded in 1888, that produced some of Britain’s finest wood type for over 100 years. In response to homogenous online design trends, Fontsmith launched three new serif typefaces: FS Kim, FS Ostro and FS Neruda, which are all aimed at those who tell stories – from brands to books to newspapers and magazines, to online editorial platforms. Eye-catching and versatile, the serifs all work across an impressive range of settings: headlines, large body copy, smaller body copy and more.

Designed by Jesse Ragan, Study is based on a hand-drawn alphabet published in 1968 by Czech-American designer and wood engraver Rudolph Ruzicka. In this one, Jesse merged calligraphic details with a more formal typographic structure, making its twists and turns eye-catching at large sizes, yet unobtrusive when sized for paragraph text. Available in six weights (from Light to Extra Bold) with their italics.

What a refreshing typeface from Rosetta Type! Designed by David Březina, Handjet is a dot-based display face with several fun ways to fill those dots, to make experimental and custom variations. It even includes some endearing OpenType cats and dogs to play with. With full support for Latin and Cyrillic languages. Free for personal and commercial use.

Named after the VG5000, a computer created by Phillips in 1984, the latest release of Velvetyne playfully combines pixelated and curved strokes, blurring the lines between old and new digital shapes. It also includes many glyphs and pictograms from the VG5000’s original set, and contemporary gender-neutral characters. Open source, free for personal and commercial use.

Fernando Faro released Secuela, a condensed sans-serif evoking a feeling of warmth and personality. The typeface is available in five weights (Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and ExtraBold) with matching italics, and a variable font version was also made, which can be downloaded together with the other font files. Designed by Aceler Chua, Farro was meant to become the new custom display typeface of Hong Kong design studio Grayscale. However, as it developed, they noticed that “its silhouette was becoming too joyful for a multipurpose brand typeface” and decided to release it freely instead.
