Happy Pride Month to one and all! Let’s give each other the respect we’d want for ourselves.

Alitu, The Podcast Maker, is proud to support Issue #157 of The Fiction Podcast Weekly, with their Guide to How to Record a Podcast Remotely, by Tae Haahr. Can’t get everyone in the same room? Alitu’s Call Recorder can help.
You want to promote your podcast to people who are genuinely interested in audio fiction and audio drama, right? I thought so. Fortunately, this newsletter goes out to over one thousand, three hundred, and twenty people who like audio fiction and audio drama podcasts. You can sponsor an issue (or many issues) and support The Fiction Podcast Weekly for as little as $340 for 4 weeks, or $99 per week. Or purchase a Classified Ad for $28. Go get ‘em, Tiger! And now, on with the show.

Podnews reports that  Spotify has quietly changed its platform rules to add a section prohibiting the promotion of “violent extremism”(Podnews’ document shows changes). Finally. The new document is so specific you might want a content warning for the descriptions of what’s no longer tolerated. Anyone who was worried about grey areas or a slippery slope, this leaves very little room, if any, for that. Spotify says, “We take these decisions seriously and keep context in mind when making them. Breaking the rules may result in the violative content being removed from Spotify. Repeated or egregious violations may result in accounts being suspended and/or terminated.” Spotify has clarified how consequences can affect the podcast’s discoverability and monetization.
This article from NiemanLab is from April, but it shows clearly how a platform can manipulate algorithms in order to reduce (or enhance) the reach of specific pieces of content, such as podcasts, episodes, or Facebook posts. It’s in the 12th paragraph or so. Attention, Joe Rogan: Spotify now reserves the right to restrict the reach of misinformation So, basically, they won’t censor you for sharing certain kinds of information, they’ll just make your content harder to find and harder to capitalize on.
I find it fascinating that certain kinds of content can be easier for thousands of people to find with a little bit of math and coding.
I told myself I was going to stop harshing on Spotify, but here we go again: Spotify stopped political ads in 2020. It just quietly brought them back. Political ads will be on podcasts, not music, and “Spotify will only host ads from known political entities, and it won’t accept ads from the much broader bucket of issue-related groups. The ads will also only run on Spotify’s podcast network for now, not its free music-streaming network. Podcasts will also have the option of turning off political ads if they want to. ” So, maybe that Wild Turkey debacle helped them learn something?
