Snap debuted its first pair of Spectacles—a pair of camera-connected sunglasses that uploaded first-person video to its social platform—in 2016. At the time, fans and critics alike wondered if the company’s first foray into hardware would change the way people share their lives online. That hasn’t exactly happened, but Snap hasn’t given up on the glasses, either. Today, the company launched the third version of its Spectacles, and the new, depth-sensing model shows Snap pushing forward toward an ambitious vision of the future of augmented reality. Snap isn’t trying to sell every user on these $380 frames. Instead, these Spectacles are a testing ground where Snap hopes early adopters will validate its tech. As a spokesperson put it to us: “We’re putting it out there with the goal of learning about some critical things. We’re not trying to sell a billion of these.”
