Chances are, you aren’t planning a vacation any time soon, and neither am I. And while that’s very good for preventing the spread of COVID-19, it’s wreaked havoc on Airbnb’s business model. The company is preparing for a 54% drop in revenue in 2020—the year it had intended to go public.But while tourism is down, Airbnb is experimenting with another tactic: traveling without leaving your couch. Last month, it launched Online Experiences, in which you can pay to join a Zoom call and learn pasta making from Italian chefs in Italy, or get a tour of Chernobyl with no fear of radiation. At the urging of my editor, I opted to take a magic class. Yes, there were a lot of kids. No, I wasn’t the only grownup there. So is Airbnb onto something? Read on to find out.
