It’s not easy to grow a business without external funding.
You have to swim, or you’ll sink fast.
This is a real truth. It’s not easy to grow a sustainable business even with external funding, but without any funding, it’s even harder, but I think in the long run it’s better.
I don’t have much experience (yet), but I agree with the author in multiple ways. Creating a sustainable business is something not everyone can do, and if you start with an external funding you don’t solve any long-term problems for the business, you are just solving a short-term problem of money, which is unrelated with your business. If you want to create a sustainable business the only way to do it is to have customers, and money can not buy you that.
I’m not saying all companies should start without initial funding (sometimes to start your business you have big expenses, like if you need to produce physical products), but I think everyone who wants to create a sustainable business should consider also the option to make it without any external funding, and I agree with the article pros and cons of this choice.
