Netflix is a big customer of AWS, and this is no secret. They are often talking about it publicly and what technology do they use. In this article, they are explaining an interesting solution for a problem they have.
They mention that 70% of Netflix’s computing need is video encoding, and for this reason, they want to reduce the price of computing power they need for the job.
This article explains that they have developed a spot market (similar to the Spot Instances in AWS) but only with unused servers they have already bought from AWS. I have never thought about this, but for a company like Netflix, this makes a lot of sense.
