There was quite a large dustup on Catholic websites this past week regarding ad orientem worship. One cardinal with both a liturgical competency and a commission to direct liturgical matters for the Vatican recommended that priests and bishops everywhere return to facing liturgical East. It didn’t take long for the Vatican press office to do everything they reasonably could to suppress talk of returning to normal liturgical orientation.
My takeaway is that ad orientem is a bigger deal than one might have suspected, given that the Modernists wasted no time giving a public response on the matter (unlike other situations in which the pope has said some less than Catholic things).
This book is a fascinating historical read that I am still working through. Published decades before the Charismatic movement gained steam, it analyzes movements and sects in Church history that prefigure the Charismatic movement.
