In this week’s newsletter, I wan to discuss a very popular supplement.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom.
It is well known that Lion’s mane mushroom can influence your brain function. It does this via many mechanisms, however, the main one is that it can significantly increase Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) secretion in the brain.
This increases brain cell survival, repairs damage and supports memory function. In fact, increased NGF levels can even enhance smell, vision, dream recall and verbal fluency! (Delcroix et al., 2003).
📚PSYCHOACTIVE COMPOUNDS PRESENT:
The word psychoactive just refers to the ability of a drug/herb/compound to affect the mind and alter one’s perception of the world (Janik et al., 2017).
Lion’s Mane contains a Kappa opioid agonist. Erinacine E is a kappa opioid receptor agonist (Saito et al., 1998). The kappa opioid system is very complex, and is very much linked in with addiction, reward related behaviours and euphoria/dysphoria.
Some people that use Lion’s Mane experience dysphoria so they prefer to use this mushroom at night.
—> Dysphoria is the opposite of euphoria, in case you’re wondering.
🔴MAY REDUCE SEX-DRIVE/LIBIDO:
You read that right. Most men are aware of this. Lion’s Mane does contain some pretty strong DHT blockers, which can cause side effects very similar to the hair loss drug Finesteride (Fujita et al., 2005). DHT blockers are notorious for causing sexual side effects, and this must be noted by all users, women as well.
Lion’s mane is loaded with benefits for brain function. Beyond this, it also has some very promising research for improving immune function.
However, the side effects are entirely real and must not be overlooked. There are also many other NGF boosters that I will be presenting soon.
💡Have you noticed feeling like the world is a bit darker, your mood flatlined and changes in your world perception when taking Lion’s Mane?
