Video is about consuming more in less time
With the everlasting growth of mobile traffic, the form of communication has been shifting along with it and will keep shifting even more towards different formats. Text isn’t out. It’s still valuable. Images are easy to push. Video and animated gifs are consumed more than ever as they are even more valuable and less time-consuming for the user to grasp the meaning of a piece of content with lots of context.
As time is the most precious asset on earth, yet so many people keep focusing on the content they feel comfortable producing.
Interesting reads about “time”:
On the other end, there is the human urge to build up a status and the urge of people to compare themselves with others. Visual communication is a very strong asset if it comes to sketching stories, stronger than text. Besides that, the ability to fool people (Instragram culture) due to visual communication is very real. It can be interpreted in a somewhat superficial way which text can’t. The effort that goes into reading, makes the need for value even bigger.
Isn't it ironic, don't you think?
The irony about video is that it’s super easy to consume, although high quality video content is hard to create.
Why it's not going away any time soon

It’s hard to define the cause of this shift. Its the chicken and the egg story. A self fulfilling prophecy. Facebook has adopted mobile first which is probably, in my humble opinion a big driver for even more mobile usage of the internet for the gross of the average people.
A mobile device is currently used to consume short copy & visuals where and whenever we want it. With the growth of mobile, the need for visual storytelling keeps growing. The written word makes place for visual content for all industries, no matter what.
Snackable content (in this context: short lists, pictures, 10s video, …) has made us want even more, even faster and even more snackable, which translates itself into the trend we see these days in Branding: it’s all about transparency & values.
More stuff that the user wants to be delivered right to the fingertips with the least amount of friction. Common example used in this context is definitely mobile commere (mobile payments), although people underestimate the need for adapted content as well!
More why's
Late to the party
OOYLALA a video analytics & monetization platform released in Q2 2013 already a report saying the future was then already here but distribution hasn’t evolved as fast. Second machine age. Check.
Everybody is a media company
Consume video is one thing, but current phones are equiped with heavy high-quality camera’s and internet access. Creating content is even more easy than ever. Twitter confirms every time why people are small media compagnies on their own. Twitter did for mobile what AOL did for email.
Getting started
First, equipment. Don’t buy to fancy stuff.
There are two simple options:

  1. Shoot video with your smartphone (easy)
  2. Shoot video with a point & shoot camera (investment needed)
About lighting, there are several tricks how to deal with lighting without extra gear. Unless you’re interviewing or doing in-house shots in dark places, get some gear.
On the other end, there is the human urge to build up a status and the urge of people to compare themselves with others. Visual communication is a very strong asset if it comes to sketching stories, stronger than text. Besides that, the ability to mislead people (Instragram culture) or the room for misinterpretation by people is very real.

Distrubtion is all about making derivatives
Video is at the top of the hierarchy of content format, right now. So … a good start to make derivatives (yes, me too had to google this word) and start spreading on several platforms. Follow the interest of the platform, the creative is very flexible as long as the message is targeting the right people or spread at the right platform.
