From AI to simply … a drip of paint, solving ‘nothing’, for both sides.
And how about City marketing done well?

Keep It Simple Stupid
Everybody is so into preaching AI, yet it isn’t the solution to all the issues we want to solve with efficiency technology (which ML is in the first place, don’t forget that). Remember the Hongkong laser vs facial recognition tweet?

Hong Kong protestors are on another level. Here they’re using lasers to avoid facial recognition cameras. A cyber war against Chinese artificial intelligence. https://t.co/t1hIczr5Go

Well… simple solutions are most of the times the most effective. Spray some paints over it & catch them later.

Hong Kong police fire blue-dye water cannon at protesters as banned demo turns violent

BREAKING: Hong Kong Police for the first time deployed water cannons infused with blue dye. The idea is to identify protesters and facilitate arrests. Carrie Lam reportedly told her cabinet that she would “lock them all up.” Looks like she meant what she said. https://t.co/N10HzNggk8

Reaction to this?
People are going to voluntarily spray blue dye on themselves now. Is the specific shade the police use easily available? Or would Alibaba see a spike in disposable overalls this week?
Technology is never a solution!

Local = Economical sustainability
City marketing is clever shit to do. Yet, city marketing is often mistaken for promoting the city to people outside of the city. Tourism, simply said. While the Belgium is struggling with qualitative tourists (read: too many tourists spending small amounts & some of them we’d rather not have) and is planning to shift strategies, cities should do the same thing.
Like countries should think about “What if we can’t fly anymore” (due to climate and thus essentially due to high prices), cities should think about “What if we couldn’t drive our car anymore” (in and around the city).
Kortrijk is a good example of that. New initiatives putting the bikes before the car, allowing new shops to start at interesting rates/rents and allowing Lago to build a big local subtropic pool has revived the local economy and attract nearby living people to the site.
What’s next? A platform. Well… sort of. A platform led by a team team (call it a small agency if you want) to extract the maximum benefit of the network (user generated content - hello). Like Helsinki did with https://www.myhelsinki.fi/en
Helsinki Marketing wants to include its partners in doing things and producing content together. We no longer offer traditional visibility and advertising in Helsinki Marketing’s channels; instead, the idea is to enhance the effectiveness of our marketing and diversify our cooperation network. Together with our partners we want to carry out more joint activities, create more content, and inspire more recommendations.
