For the last few decades it has been assumed that the Dome of the Rock would need to be supernaturally destroyed in order to allow a Jewish Temple to be rebuilt. There have also been various locations proposed that are outside of the Temple Mount area, which theoretically would alleviate the conflict over the Temple Mount, but they just don’t have any true merit. They may sound good, but underneath they have unsupportable assumptions and literally fly in the face of nearly two thousand years of historic testimony and clear positive archaeological evidence.

So What's the Status?
The big question is, has anything happened yet that could change the status quo and lead to rebuilding a temple on the Temple Mount?
Well, YES.
The Abraham Accords could truly change everything on the Temple Mount. The Islamic world is still highly fractured, but it is coelescing into two main camps–North and South. The southern Gulf States have begun to make peace with Israel though the Abraham Accords and they are also starting to look at the Temple Mount differently.
True. Jordan still fights to control the Temple Mount through the Waqf, but they may soon have a tough decision to make. Either join with the southern nations and loosen their stranglehold on the Temple Mount, or they can maintain their hardline and become a puppet of Iran or Turkey or even be deposed altogether and taken over from within.
Questioning the Holiness of Jerusalem in Islam
Furthermore, the status of Jerusalem being the “third holiest site in Islam” is being questioned within moderate Islamic circles. If this continues, and Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords, then Israel may find themselves with new allies who are not opposed to them rebuilding a temple–Especially if that means they don’t have to destroy the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque in order to rebuild it.

Another thing to watch is the increasing number of visits that Jews have been making to the Temple Mount and the fact that they are frequently being allowed to even pray there. Imagine that. Wow! You mean now they can pray there? (It seems unbelievable that they have been generally prevented from openly praying on the Temple Mount for most of the past 50+ years, but they have been.)
Well, you’ve got to be able to pray before you can make start making sacrifices, so this is a good step forward. It’s still not an official state policy, mind you, but hopefully that will be coming soon, too.

And over this current Sukkot holiday in Jerusalem, a thousand Jews ascended the Temple Mount together in just one day and were allowed to pray openly. Thousands more will ascend the Temple Mount over this holiday week alone, and many more will be praying at the Western Wall for a rebuilt temple. These are all very positive steps towards building enough support to call for a rebuilt temple in the near future.
A House of Prayer for All Nations
Another important point is that the kind of temple that is being talked about is not exactly like the First and Second Temples. This new temple would be one that, in the words of Yehuda Glick and the prophet Isaiah, will be a “House of Prayer for All Nations.”
Isaiah 56:7 (NIV)
These I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.
Final Thoughts
The rebuilding of the temple and the reinstatement of at least some form of sacrificial service is an expectation that is directly inferred from scripture, but it is important to keep an open mind about exactly how those things may be fulfilled. As we move forward, these kinds of news stories and reports will make it clearer and clearer exactly how things are going to really happen. By watching closely, I think we’ll be able to figure out when these things do happen, even if that’s in a way that isn’t obvious to everyone.
Next week, I’ll talk about updates regarding War and Peace in Israel.
Until then, keep watching!
