The Bottom Line
When I try and look at all these events with my perspective from even a decade ago, not to mention from the 80s or 90s, I think things are much worse than they appear in our present context. We are getting used to seeing terrible things and are growing numb to the depravity (at least as a society)–Like we are in one global pot of water that the temperature just keeps rising in, making us continually recalibrate to a “new normal.” I’m not sure what more it is will take to be certain that the red horse is already riding, but it sure feels like we are now looking at it.
The Old Testament prophets warned about times like these…
“Because from the least even to the greatest everyone is greedy for gain; From the prophet even to the priest everyone practices deceit. They heal the brokenness of the daughter of My people superficially, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ But there is no peace. Were they ashamed because of the abomination they had done? They certainly were not ashamed, and they did not know how to blush; Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time of their punishment they shall be brought down,” Says the Lord. – Jeremiah 8:10b-12
They do not know the way of peace, And there is no justice in their tracks; They have made their paths crooked, Whoever treads on them does not know peace. – Isaiah 59:8
So buckle up, and trust that our God will deliver us from these light and momentary afflictions, which are producing for us an "eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison…”
Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. – 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NASB)
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. – Romans 8:18 (NASB)
