Many of you might not know that I have multiple tattoos. One is my half sleeve on my right arm that is visible with short sleeves, but the other three are not visible when I am wearing a shirt.
The one on my left shoulder is a dove with VERITAS written above it. I did not serve in our military, which is often what is associated with VERITAS, but the word has deep meaning to me.
VERITAS, of course, means “truth”.
My goal in my life is to be a man of my word, even when I don’t want to be. This means I always try to show up when I say I will.
In fact, my biggest regrets in life are when I told someone I would do something or be somewhere, and then I did not show up. These are the things that still haunt me.
Today is a great example. I got back to Denver late last evening from Northern California where my wife and I were for the weekend with some of our closest friends.
I also have a 1230p flight to NYC today, getting in about 6pm.
I want nothing more than to skip my flight and the awards banquet I am supposed to go to tomorrow. I want to stay in Denver, in my warm house, and get my head into work and go into my introvert hole to recover from a weekend of socializing.
But I’m not going to.
I’m finishing writing this email then I am going to go shower, then pack, then do a call, then hop in a Lyft to the airport.
Because I gave my word that I’d be there tomorrow, and so I am going.
What about you? Is this something you think about and make a promise to yourself to do, to be a person of your word?
Let’s all show up, and give it our all.
By the way, if you didn’t hear my Smart vs Wise podcast episode last week then listen to it here. It is 5 minutes long and may help you out.
