Why Equality Works

We at Disruptor’s Handbook are delighted with the result of the Marriage Equality postal survey, because we believe that inclusion and equality matters for everyone. But it’s also true that for a truly innovative nation, you need greater equality.
Research has consistently shown that lower levels of inequality are linked with innovation. A culture that is open to different ways of thinking and living is one that is more likely to experiment, and to collaborate.  And it turns out that business cultures where people are encouraged to stand up and speak up about issues are more than three times more likely to reach their innovation potential.
Of course, there are concerns about the technology-driven economic segregation that can arise from concentrated innovation in cities, but this is more a problem of failing to facilitate broad participation in innovative projects. It’s not a product of segregation on the basis of cultural ideas, but rather economic opportunity. And that can be addressed through greater social entrepreneurship.
So it turns out that what is ethically correct, is also socially and economically beneficial. All round, we think that’s worth celebrating.
