How Good is AI? And when will it take over the world?

We are frequently told that automation will render many jobs redundant. Now some commentators argue that we need to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order to ensure that there will be opportunities ahead for affected workers.
So how sophisticated is AI? When will that technological singularity occur when synthesized superintelligence overtakes our own capability?
As impressive as learning systems are right now, we are still living in an age where AI is still wanting. It’s spectacularly difficult for us to teach systems to view data, systems and processes in a way that taps into all our faculties, from intuition to critical thinking. And even among utopian advocates, the earliest date when AI will have a real impact is around 2045 - towards the tail end of most of our careers, if not well after.
But that doesn’t mean we should be complacent about the opportunities and threats of the AI-led singularity.  We have the chance now to plan ahead for the kind of future we want, and to hone the uniquely human skills that will be required in the time when automation makes repetitive and simplistic tasks a thing of the past.
Businesses should be examining AI. Not to protect the processes we currently have, but rather to consider the profoundly human future that lies ahead.
