Hey, friend! Welcome to this issue of Think.Write.Lead., where I talk a bit about my vacation and some lessons from theme park rides. Ready? Let’s go!

Last week I went with my family to Universal Studios Florida.
If you’ve been to a popular theme park, you know the drill.
You wait in line for 60 minutes or more to get on a roller coaster for 90 seconds and then go to the next ride to do the same.
A lot of waiting for a little bit of fun.
But here’s the thing though.
The creators of these rides are smart. They use the long lines to tell you a story and draw you into an adventure.
While you are waiting in line, screens, holograms, and even the decorations, tell you a story.
You’re not just riding a roller coaster, you are being hunted by velociraptors.
You’re not just visiting Hogwarts castle, you are riding a broom, fighting dragons, and dementors.
In other words, you’ve entered a world where you are a participant, not just a spectator.
And there’s the lesson for us writers.
We can talk down to our audience like lecturers or invite them to come with us on an adventure.
Writing like a thought leader means leading your readers somewhere they need to be.
You tell them a story that draws them in and earns their trust and commitment to go with you on a path they’ve never taken before (but you have).
You are going to show them how to solve a problem, follow your framework, save time, make more money, or find significance.
So, how do you do it?
Let’s try this out…
  • Who’s the hero in your writing, you or your reader?
  • Is it about you or about solving a problem for your audience?
  • Are you inviting your readers on a journey or just bragging about how much you know about a topic?
Check the last three pieces you wrote. Are you talking directly to your reader (using the pronoun “you” a lot)?
If not, try rewriting one of the posts.
  • Write a new post or blog article being intentional about making your reader part of the narrative, as if you were writing a letter to a friend.
  • Include a powerful call to action that makes them fill excited or emotional.
The influencer says: “Follow me.”
The Thought Leader says: “Follow your creativity.”
Adopt a thought leadership mindset, where the focus is on understanding and helping your audience.
Become a mentor through your writing.
And make it fun… like a roller coaster.
