As someone who now has two weekly podcasts again, I’ve had the notion of staying consistent on my mind a lot. I feel like I either do a bunch of writing one week and little podcasting, but more often than not it’s the exact opposite. While it allows me to stay consistent with my podcasts, I always feel inconsistent with my writing. I’ll hit weekly posts that I know I have coming (most of the time, anyway), but other than that I have waves of motivation to write that don’t come as often as I’d like.
With podcasts, I’ve read many articles about how anyone looking to start one, especially now, should aim to be as consistent as possible with it. I wholeheartedly agree with that notion because it’s so easy to fall behind. For anyone who has been a guest on Chat Sematary, they know how organized I try to be with that show. I have a massive spreadsheet for it and I’ve kept one for Welcome to Geekdom, although that one isn’t quite as organized.
Not everyone likes spreadsheets, and that’s fine, but for me it’s what works. When someone mentions wanting to discuss a movie, comic book, or TV show, I can go in and make note of it with a “TBD” in the recording date column. If someone changes their mind or doesn’t have time, it’s no big deal to let someone else have it. With Chat Sematary things are a little different. I have several recurring guests with the occasional person who will only do an episode or two. The order of those episodes is already predetermined since I’m going in chronological order (as much as one can). So I had people sign up for whichever they wanted to discuss and it allows everyone to have ample time to prepare since the podcast is currently set to run through 2021. That will extend once more adaptations start coming out, and there are always more on the way.
While I’m consistent in some areas, there’s still work to be done with my writing, including this newsletter. My goal is to build this newsletter up even more this year, which means I’ll need to provide content consistently. I have some issues that are shorter than others and it’s gone through a couple changes since I first started it. In order to grow this newsletter throughout the year, though, I’ll need to plan out these articles further in advance than I have been. Maybe I just need another spreadsheet.
How do you try to stay consistent with whatever you’re working on?
