The interesting thing is that these countries have different paths to the mobile payments world. Europe and the US had the pre-existing cards ecosystem that included banks and payment providers such as VISA and MasterCard so Apple Pay and Google Pay have been built upon it. But China didn’t and as a result, they jumped directly from cash to mobile payments. 64% of people with smartphones in China use mobile payments through WeChat Pay and Alipay. One could imagine that one day Apply would add an ability to top up your Apple Pay account directly and remove the intermediaries altogether but they still have to cooperate.
