Dave's Dives #5: Journaling, Annual Retrospectives, and 14 Peaks

Dave's Dives
Dave's Dives
Hey all! The past month has been a little crazy. With a baby on the way, we’re looking to move into a bigger home. We’ve been preparing our condo for listing with some painting and renovations that we’d put off. But all of the work is more or less finished and we’re looking to list it in two weeks!
I haven’t been consistently writing lately, but when I do thankfully I tend to write quite a bit. I’m slowly starting to develop a coherent theme for this newsletter. Each edition will have a deep dive with my own writing about a specific topic, as well as several related links. Then, I’ll just fill in some of the common sections, like Dev Dives and What I’ve Been Doing.
Let me know if you like this format! If not, what have you liked so far? If you haven’t liked anything so far, thanks for sticking around anyway 😅.
Let’s dive in!

📘🖋 Deep Dive: The Benefits of Daily Journaling
I’ve been journaling on and off for a few years now. In recent months I’ve slumped, however.
My struggle with journaling consistently resulted from a lack of direction. I would write about anything at all with no clear structure, nothing to guide my thinking. Freestyle writing is a great practice, but the idea of filling a blank page up was often daunting. And so I got complacent.
I decided to fix my journaling practice by taking a guided approach. So, I recently purchased The Five Minute Journal.

To say that it’s helped has been an understatement! Over the past 21 days, I only missed days. Each and every other day I was journaling twice per day, in the morning and in the evening. And it felt pretty easy. I just needed to answer the journal prompts.
The practice of preparing for and reflecting on your day has many benefits. It’s made me more grounded and present. Practicing gratitude has made me more thankful and grateful for the things that I take for granted. And it’s helped me remember and take stock of the best parts of my day.

🔨 What I've Been Doing
  • Playing Wordle daily and sharing results with friends and family.
  • Mentoring students again 1-3x per week at Lighthouse Labs.
  • Following Dr. Andrew Huberman’s (him again!) advice on habit-building by aiming to perform 5-6 habits as daily as possible for 21 days.
  • Getting way too excited about The Bodybuilding Meal Prep Cookbook. I’ve already made a few recipes from it and they’ve all been both awesome and healthy!
  • Playing Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt again after finishing season two of the Netflix series. Man, I love Henry Cavill.

💬 Quote I'm Thinking About
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.
